COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS PURPOSE: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce strongly supports American industry dedicated to protecting human health through the testing, manufacturing and marketing of biomedical products. As scientific innovation of biomedical products begins at the lab bench, the Chamber will inaugurate a 2008 partnership with the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, a Federal government agency with the mission of promoting and encouraging new discoveries, to recognize, through four monetary awards, one adult scientist/researcher; one secondary school educator; and two secondary school students who are judged to exemplify excellence in the life sciences field of biology and chemistry. ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION PROCESS: This is a competition NOT a grant application. Individuals compete and their accomplishments are judged on how they exemplify excellence in life sciences. The 2008 Life Sciences Awards program shall consist of the following four awards: Chairmen’s Distinguished Life Sciences Award The $25,000 Chairmen’s Distinguished Life Sciences Award will be presented to an adult scientist/researcher who is making or has recently made a significant and positive contribution related to developing a “cutting edge” innovation in the field of life sciences. The Chairmen’s Award will provide incentive for continuing the research. Criteria
Life Sciences Educator Award The $10,000 Life Sciences Educator Award will be presented to a current secondary school educator, with at least five years of teaching experience, and who is making or has recently made a significant and positive contribution related to promoting the study of life sciences to his or her students. Criteria
Biology Student Award The $5,000 Biology Student Award will be presented to a current secondary school student who is making or has recently made a significant and positive contribution related to the study of biology. Criteria
Chemistry Student Award The $5,000 Chemistry Student Award will be presented to a current secondary school student who is making or has recently made a significant and positive contribution related to promoting the study of chemistry. Criteria
NOMINATION MATERIALS:
ADDITIONAL RULES: Nominees must be permitted, by their employer or any other relevant authority, to accept a monetary award bestowed by the Foundation, a Federal government agency. Awards may be taxable income to the recipient. All tax liabilities are the sole responsibility of the winner. All Federal, State and local laws and regulations apply. Winners must attend the awards ceremony in Monday, June 9, 2008, in Washington, D.C., in order to receive the award. Anyone who cannot attend the award ceremony will automatically be disqualified. Nominations are received online ONLY at: www.ccolumbusfoundationawards.org. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, March 18, 2008. **EXTENDED** The Foundation reserves the right to cancel or change the Life Sciences Awards competition at any time at its full discretion.
